History of Kennesaw
Kennesaw is located in the center of Cobb county approximately 20 miles from the city of Atlanta. Settled in the early 1830's it became an official city in 1897. Originally known as Big Shanty during the Civil War it was later named Kennesaw after Kennesaw Mountain which is the highest point in metro Atlanta and was the site of the Civil War Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.
Not only one of the 20 fastest growing suburbs in the U.S. it was named by Family Circle in August 2007 as one of the 10 best towns for families. A must see is the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History located off of main street in downtown Kennesaw. On display is "The General" which was a Confederate train stolen by Yankees and was the subject of the exciting movie The Great Locomotive Chase. |
