Located in the rolling foot hills of north Georgia Cartersville is the county seat of Bartow County.
Founded in 1832 by settlers who won their land in Georgia's sixth land lottery it was originally called Birmingham but changed to Cartersville in 1846.
Burned completely to the ground during the Civil War on General Sherman's infamous "March to the Sea" the town was rebuilt in the late 1860's and was incorporated becoming a city in 1872. The population remained about 5,000 people from 1880 till 1940.
