Canton Georgia History
Located in Cherokee County, Canton was originally incorporated in the early 1830's (around 1832/1833) in the name of "Etowah". The name was changed the next year to Canton to reference Canton, China. Two of the founding fathers of the town were trying to establish a silk industry like China. With the development of Canton it soon became the richest market and trading center in the outlying agricultural districts.
Georgia's first hundred years in the Northwest part of Georgia were known as "Indian Country". Settlers bypassed this area as a general rule until 1802 when Georgia made a treaty with the Federal Government that relinquished the Western Territory for the removal of Indians in the boundaries. Most Indian tribes were removed from the area but many of the Cherokee tribe continued to inhabit the Western Territory until the summer of 1838. The removal of the Cherokee Nation is known as The Trail of Tears.
Canton over the years has or is known for marble finishing, cotton and textile mills, Cagle Dairy Farms and Seaboard Farms poultry.
